Dumb Cop in Rare Form

Last night, Dumb Cop next door had a party. Half a dozen of the vehicles drive to the party were parked illegally; blocking the sidewalk, in front of a fire hydrant, and even double-parked perpendicular to the curb.

As much as I hate resorting to it, I called the local sheriff, as Dumb Cop works for another county and the two agencies don't get along. Works out well for the rest of us I suppose. A deputy showed up and made them all re-park and then left.

Then the party got into full swing. At about 2am, I got tired of it and called county again. The neighbors and party guests were in rare form; drunk and loud, howling at the moon. A deputy came out and they got quiet for a while, then cranked the music up and got obnoxious again for another hour or so.

And cops wonder why most people don't like them.

Ohio State Gets Armored Fighting Vehicle: “Specifically Designed for Asymmetric Warfare”

If we're not living in a militarized police state, then please explain what Ohio State University could possibly need with one of these:

The Ohio State University Department of Public Safety has acquired an armored military vehicle that looks like it belongs in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Gary Lewis, a senior director of media relations at OSU, told The Daily Caller via email that the "unique, special-purpose vehicle is a replacement" for the "police fleet." He called the armored jalopy "an all-hazard, all-purpose, public safety-response vehicle" with "obviously enhanced capabilities."

Public Waste and Collapse

No wonder municipalities across the country are going bankrupt at a faster rate than ever, during a time in which politicians are telling us we are in a recovery. Dropping off trash a a monthly neighborhood collection, the county employs three sheriff deputies to open a gate and check residents' papers. This is the sort of waste that is overloading the public governments around the world.

Ohio State Gets Armored Fighting Vehicle: “Specifically Designed for Asymmetric Warfare”

If you don't think the US is a police state, then why would a vehicle such as this be acceptable for a public university when it looks designed for duty in Afghanistan? What a gross waste of taxpayer funds.

Dallas County Sheriff Acquires ‘Mine Proof’ SUV

Yet another example of legal plunder under the guise of public protection, that comes off as more waste of coerced taxpayer dollars.

"There's a very glaring, very fundamental question we haven't yet addressed: Why in holy hell does Dallas County need an armored military vehicle built to withstand a minor apocalypse? The underlying reason seems to be that military trucks are fucking cool, but no one's actually saying that. The sheriff's office is touting it as a tool that will help them better serve warrants. "Having a tactical vehicle will not only provide warrants execution with the equipment to assist in performing their jobs but will provide an overall safety arch," Chief Deputy Marlin Suell wrote to commissioners. Because there's no telling when North Texas might descend into sectarian warfare and start planting IEDs along Riverfront Boulevard."

Goodcop on Reddit Crossing the Blue Line

A former law enforcement officer on Reddit writes about crossing the thin blue line and calling out police corruption, definitely worth a read. As many bad cops as there are, most really are good people with good intentions.

Michigan Father Killed in Marijuana Child Removal Incident

A prosecutor in northern Michigan has cleared the police officer who shot and killed a Grayling man as police and Child Protective Services (CPS) employees attempted to seize his three-year-old. The attempted removal of the minor child came after a police officer who came to the scene on a call earlier that same day reported that he smelled marijuana and reported the incident to CPS authorities, who decided the child needed to be removed. The dead man, William Reddie, 32, becomes the 17th person killed in US domestic drug law enforcement operations so far this year.
Basically, someone called the cops because Reddie was having a loud argument over the phone, who questioned Reddie and then returned to kidnap his son despite a lack of evidence that the son was in any harm. Rather than working through the situation, they simply shot and killed the person that they provoked. And people still wonder why police are generally despised...

'The face of terror': Boston sergeant suspended over leak of Tsarnaev's arrest photos

How dare a law enforcement officer allow the peasants insight into evidence or accounts of an investigation.

The Truth About Police Misconduct Litigation

In the last 10 months, the NPMSRP tracked 925 civil lawsuits regarding police misconduct reported in the media, this represents about 27% of all reports of police misconduct that were captured during that time period. What about all those other cases? As I mentioned in our Police Misconduct Victim’s Guide, getting an attorney to take a police misconduct lawsuit on is a lot more difficult than most people are led to believe.
Why?
During the same 10 month period, the NPMSRP statistical analysis indicated that, of the police misconduct lawsuits filed, only 1/3 of those resulted in an award for the plaintiff. Of the 33% of police misconduct lawsuits that resulted in a win for the victim, 74% were settled out of court and only 26% resulted in a favorable judgment for the victim.

San Jose Police to Record Race of Everyone Stopped

"Under a new stop and question policy in San Jose, California, officers will be ordered to record the race of every person who undergoes such treatment, as well as the race of every person they force to "curb sit," not merely arrest. The goal: to determine if San Jose police are racially profiling. The new policy is a response to complaints from citizens about minorities being targeted in non-traffic situations."

I like the direction this is going, but I would be more excited to see the practice applied to metros like DC or Chicago with a widespread history of racial profiling.

Off-duty police officer shoots family's dog in front of 12-year-old

An off duty police officer has shot his neighbour's dog dead in front of it's 12-year-old owner, after it allegedly attacked him and his wife. The Fitzhenry family, from Harris County, Texas, say their beloved boxer dog, Gunner - who they described as a big softie - was shot by the off-duty Houston police officer on Friday along a pathway.Houston Police Department Officer Mark Condon claims the four-year-old dog charged at him and his wife, after it escaped from the Fitzhenry's garden by accident. But according to 12-year-old Dalton Fitzhenry, who family say treated the dog like a brother,  the pet had only wanted to play.

Failure to Perform Duty

So while kids vandalized our property, our neighbor, a law enforcement officer, stood by and watched, effectively encouraging it by not discouraging it. Worse yet, two of the kids were in his care, and the note they left misdirected the blame on those kids not in their care. Then they left for the weekend...

And cops wonder why people tend to generally dislike and distrust them. Luckily, competing jurisdictions do not always tend to get along well, so we have recourse avenues.

I try to be optimistic, wanting to believe that this particular individual is the exception and not the rule, but I'm less encouraged as time goes on. I have even met some decent people who happen to be in law enforcement. In a free and voluntary society, we would simply not pay these sort of people, effectively discouraging these sort of characters from holding positions of authority.

Cop "Euthanizes" Box of Kittens with Gun

An animal control officer shootsa box of kittens in front of a family with children, rather than taking them to be euthanized, if that were even necessary.

An Ohio policeman shot to death a litter of kittens on Wednesday, telling a group of screaming children that the animals would be going to "kitty heaven". But instead of firing the officer, the local police department cleared him of any wrongdoing.

In a free market, psychopaths like this guy would never be able to hold a job like this.
